Celebrating 10 years with Andrew Wheeler

27.11.2024

What do determination and a talent for building long-term relationships have in common? Andrew Wheeler, of course! As we celebrate his decade-long journey with InterFinancial, it’s clear why he’s such a key part of the team. Originally from South Africa, Andrew’s great communication skills and persuasive nature ensure he never lets an opportunity slip by. He’s always looking for new clients and making industry connections, all while wearing the InterFinancial badge with pride. Whether he’s on the phone or in-person, he’s constantly engaging with clients. Let’s take a moment to hear what keeps the fire burning in Andrew and what has contributed to his success over the years.

Reflecting on your career, what drew you to joining InterFinancial in 2014, and what has kept you motivated over the past decade?

I was drawn to InterFinancial as it has been considered a trusted independent advisory business since its inception in 1987. For me, over the last 10 years, the real drive has been the strategy to leverage the goodwill of the brand to originate transactions that meet our target market.

You’re known for your great persuasion and communication skills. What are some of the strategies you use to connect and maintain your relationship with clients?

Being honest and open builds trust, which is essential for a client to feel comfortable taking advice for a transaction. Most of my clients are retiring vendors so a sell-side transaction will generally be an event they only do once in their life. InterFinancial’s track record with first-tier clients has created confidence for a client in our ability to optimise their outcomes.

You have a diverse career background, from property development to M&A. How did your experiences shape the way you approach your work today?

M&A is a skill you learn and refine along the way, comprising a range of professional disciplines. My diverse commercial experience in property development to managing my own family business have helped me greatly while navigating a broad profile of transactions and clients.

How do you stay organised and keep track of all the moving parts, especially when you’re juggling clients’ phone calls and meetings constantly?

I enjoy the self-discipline and drive in setting up processes and procedures to manage multiple tasks including current and near-term pipeline transactions and broad marketing initiatives. I maintain regular contact with my network by putting timely reminders for the profile of the contact and opportunity. This is a process that I enjoy doing.

After 10 years with us, what’s one thing you’ve learned that has had the biggest impact on your career?

My role is performance-driven, however, working in a team environment always achieves greater outcomes with the combination of individual skills and contacts. As a result of this dynamic, I have enhanced my overall knowledge of the different industries and sectors.

Lastly, looking ahead, what excites you about the future of our industry and your continued journey with InterFinancial?

The thrill of identifying and securing larger quality transactions for InterFinancial is what keeps me going. No two transactions are ever the same in both the business and the stakeholders. It‘s truly the uniqueness of each transaction that keeps the industry exciting.

From technical capability to economic inevitability: Why Clean Energy companies fail to scale?

Working with organisations attempting to commercialise clean energy technologies, I have observed a pattern persistent enough to warrant explicit articulation. Across hydrogen, electrification, storage, biogas, low-carbon fuels, and industrial heat, companies with credible technology, capable teams, and supportive boards still fail to compound enterprise value. Not because the technology disappoints, and not because the market […]

Not every healthcare deal is a sale: rethinking what M&A can look like

When healthcare business owners come to us thinking about a transaction, the conversation almost always starts in the same place. What is the business worth, and what does a sale process look like? Those are the right questions. But they’re not always the only ones that matter. Embedded in both is an assumption; that the […]

On the floor at EvokeAg 2026: Luke Harwood’s reflections on Australian Agtech

EvokeAg 2026 drew over 1,500 delegates from 18 countries to Melbourne in February, with the Federal Government committing another $450,000 to support the event over the next three years. The visible momentum is real, and the cohort of companies I spent two days meeting reflected it. Most were past proof-of-concept by a meaningful margin, with […]
